Full-time yacht-based tutor for boys (10 and 11) travel the Mediterranean and on land
A unique opportunity for an adventurous, energetic, inspiring and multidisciplinary tutor to join an American family of four as they take a year out to explore the Mediterranean aboard their 39m motor yacht. You will be responsible for home schooling two male siblings (10 and 11, entering 5th and 6th grades). Teaching beyond the curriculum, your structured and adaptable, teaching will enable the boys to stay ahead of the curve in their US curriculum and use their travel experiences to provide a deeper cultural education. Desirable candidates will have experience working onboard and travelling with a family and with students who have complex learning profiles.
A strong swimmer with an active lifestyle, you will be ready to integrate into healthy and active family life, and yacht crew operations. You will be required to take part in relevant safety training and medical reviews to ensure your safety whilst working aboard a yacht. You will work with a crew who have been hand-picked by the family because of their experience working with children and tutors. The First mate has particular experience instructing water sports and this will likely be part of the children’s schedule, that you work with the family to create. You are not expected to provide childcare that is beyond the remit of an academic tutor, however, at times you may be in sole charge of the boys.
The role will be partly at sea and partly on land, as the family travel through the Mediterranean to visit a range of attractions, from Grand Prix’s to boat shows, World Heritage Sites and a range of other adventures.
Planning, teaching and reporting
In collaboration with the family and crew, you will create and implement a completely tailored teaching plan and curriculum. The boys will be taught separately and some excursions and time on land will also be separate. The extensive itinerary will integrate port stops with immersive learning across a range of subject areas, including art, culture and marine biology. Successful candidates will be expected to utilise effective online teaching methods and platforms in their planning.
Working with the children and family, you will agree on a daily learning schedule that supports healthy routines, including reading time, physical activity and mindfulness. Your careful planning will enable you to develop academic goals for each boy, assessing and reassessing these throughout the trip.
Your role is key in ensuring that this is an enriching and positive educational experience tailored to the individual learning styles of each boy. More than an academic tutor, you will mentor, guide and support the boys, encouraging the development of emotional resilience, teamwork and social skills both in your lessons and casual interactions. Your passion for travel, education and outdoor activities and learning will add a sense of real-world exploration, wonder and excitement to an already exciting plan.
Alongside your regular communication, you will create a formal, written reporting system with the family to track progress and prepare for the boy’s return to school in the future. You will collaborate with the school and teachers as necessary to ensure alignment with their academic curriculum and goals.
You will adhere to the family’s policies and procedures, including confidentiality agreements and data protection protocols. You will agree to participate in periodic performance evaluations and professional development activities as agreed upon with the family.
