Behavioural Skills Teacher To Founder & Director

Updated 26th February, 2025

It is wonderful to hear about teachers who have successfully created their own business. We caught up with Karen Gibb Founder & Director of Mind Marvels to hear about her journey from teaching.

What’s Your Background?

I was a teacher who worked in “behavioural schools” and in the social work department with children in foster care. I enjoyed being with the children, but I was stuck in limbo with not enjoying the admin side of things along with the constraints that teaching gave me. I felt lost as I was so bogged down with paperwork and unnecessary meetings!

Why Did You Want To Leave Teaching?

The heavy paperwork side of things was very tiring and frustrating. All I wanted to do was work with children but felt constrained by the curriculum and management. It was a very stressful time in my life, where I never felt my best was enough sadly. I noticed more and more that children needed support with their emotions and this is where the idea for Mind Marvels was born.

Why Did You Pick A Franchise?

I developed Mind Marvels so I could run my own wellbeing sessions for children in schools. After some time, I realised I needed more help to reach other parts of the UK. Franchising seemed the logical step to take so I could support more teachers leaving the classroom to find their own fulfilling role as part of Mind Marvels.

What Does Your Week Look Like?

My week is very varied which I love! Some days, I’m in primary schools delivering wellbeing sessions, seeing the children smile and helping them discover new calming tools. Other days, I could be in nurseries or delivering wellbeing sessions to parents and children after school. I might even be at a fair or networking event sharing all things Mind Marvels!

What Did You Wish You Knew Before Starting A Franchise?

I wish I knew about franchising before I left teaching! I’ve made all the mistakes so franchisees coming on board don’t have to. It really is a ‘done for you’ model so you can buy into a tried and tested model where you’ll have all the support around you to succeed!

What Support Did Your Franchise Give You?

The team at Mind Marvels is constantly growing and evolving and with it brings new skill sets and zones of genius. The Mind Marvels network gives everything you need to grow and scale your business. People are so friendly and welcoming, ready to support you on your exciting journey, helping children now and for their future.

What Skills Did You Use From Teaching?

As teachers, we have such a varied skill set which is great for running our own business. My organisation, drive to succeed, determination to try a different way and my patience definitely helped me to develop Mind Marvels into the success it is today.

What Are Your Top 3 Tips For A Teacher Looking For A Franchise?

Do your research, do your research, do your research! In all seriousness, understand and know what you’re getting into with a franchise. They are a fantastic business model for the right people onboard. Ask all the questions you want and trust your gut with your franchise choice! Speak to other franchisees and again, do your research!

Something I always ask myself when thinking about the future; if not now, when? Where do I see myself in 1 year’s time? 5 years time? Sometimes taking the leap is scary but the reward is so, so worth it in the end.
