From Teaching to Fostering: Paul’s Career Journey
For Compass Fostering carer Paul Johnson, that belief has shaped a life dedicated to helping others grow, thrive, and realise their potential.
A Career Built On Helping Others
After spending 20 years working in local government, Paul found himself wanting to make a more meaningful difference. “I felt like I was banging my head against a brick wall,” he explained. “If you don’t look forward to Mondays anymore, you know it’s time to make a decision”.
Finding Fulfilment In The Classroom
At the age of 40, Paul retrained as a teacher, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Teaching college students, he discovered a passion for supporting young people at a pivotal stage in their lives. “The best part was helping them realise what they could achieve,” he said. “Seeing them grow in confidence and transform into capable young adults heading for university was incredible”.
From Supporting Students To Supporting Young People In Care
Paul and his wife, Sarah, first began supporting young people leaving care through their local authority. But it was when they joined Compass Fostering that their fostering journey truly began. Since 2022, the couple have cared for a sibling group of four, their first and only placement. Though the experience has brought challenges, particularly in helping one of the older siblings let go of responsibilities he had taken on too young, the rewards have been immense. With patience, structure, and love, Paul and Sarah have helped the children flourish into confident young individuals who know they are safe and valued.
The Power Of Fostering With Compass
Now serving as a Carer Representative within the Compass Fostering community, Paul is passionate about supporting others on their own fostering journeys. His advice to anyone considering fostering is clear:
“Don’t think you’ll know all the answers – you won’t. Get help, talk to others, and expect the unexpected. If you believe in making a difference, fostering will change your life as much as theirs.”
Reflecting on his time with Compass, Paul added, “I’d definitely choose Compass again. The support we’ve had has been fantastic.”
Compass Fostering praised Paul’s dedication, noting that his journey embodies Compass’ mission to help every child and carer thrive. “Our carers like Paul and Sarah show the true spirit of fostering that changes lives,” they said. “Their compassion, resilience, and teamwork reflect everything Compass stands for”.
