Fast forward 3 years, I had given birth to my second child and life had massively changed for our family. I was Head of Humanities in a secondary school for 14 years and, while I loved my job, it really didn’t work for our family anymore. I wanted a change, so I revisited the idea of running my own baby and toddler classes.

Supply teaching can be both a pragmatic and rewarding way to utilise your training in a way that works for you. It can allow you to broaden your educational palate, meet new teams, work in different environments and develop your pedagogy.

There are so many important skills that I developed during my years of teaching which have gone on to support me with building my franchise business. I find myself meeting people, visiting new settings and communicating with a variety of age groups. It’s such a wonderful part of the job and I believe the communication skills developed from teaching have really supported me with this.

I’ve always wanted to own my own business and being part of a franchise, literally buying a business in a box provided me with the support from head office to succeed. I’ve only been in the franchise for 12 months and already I can see the potential growth my business financially and be able to work around my family working half my teaching hours!

In my business journey, I came to realise that teachers really do have vital key skills and attributes which are readily transferable to other sectors – especially when it comes to running your own business.

The first thing to say is that if you leap, it’s guaranteed to be a journey that you can’t see today.  No matter what you choose to do, no matter how much you plan, surprising challenges will crop up along the way.

Leaving my job as a Headteacher of a Special School was an emotional journey. I had very mixed feelings and a sense of letting people down with a mix of fear.

If you wish to become a Learning Designer then you will need a background in education, an interest in technology, particularly audio/visual.

As a mainstream Head of Geography, I loved the craft of communicating ideas, designing the curriculum and creating learning. After 7 years I began to take a greater interest in the students who struggled to succeed.
