Teachers possess a multitude of superpowers that extend beyond the classroom. I genuinely believe they are the true rock stars, and I have immense admiration for everything they do. I am incredibly proud of being part of the education industry, and I will always be thankful that teaching paved the way for my career in the EdTech industry.

I really was starting from scratch, and there were plenty of hiring managers who weren’t ready to take a risk on someone who was changing careers and who had been out of the workforce for so long.

I still do supply teaching 2 days a week while I am growing the business. I am now able to take and pick up my children from school regularly and have the flexibility to use the time as I choose.

After a varied career as a EFL teacher and teacher trainer spanning many foreign destinations, Rhian joined Britannica Education in January 2023 to take up the role of Professional Development Expert and is currently developing a training course for secondary-based educators.

I think teachers come with a lot of skills which help when setting up a business. In a way, we’re ‘selling’ all day; standing in front of students introducing them to new concepts and constantly summarising quite complex information!

I might not be as financially rich but my life is much richer. I have time for family and friends, I’m not tired from overwork, I don’t beat myself up over the things that are out of my control. I’ve accepted and like myself and that is priceless!

I passionately believe that teachers make AMAZING virtual assistants, whether or not they choose to niche into education businesses as I have.  We are confident communicators, able to work with loads of different stakeholders, brilliant at juggling many, many balls without ever dropping them, and uber-organised.

In my business journey, I came to realise that teachers really do have vital key skills and attributes which are readily transferable to other sectors – especially when it comes to running your own business.

The first thing to say is that if you leap, it’s guaranteed to be a journey that you can’t see today.  No matter what you choose to do, no matter how much you plan, surprising challenges will crop up along the way.

Leaving my job as a Headteacher of a Special School was an emotional journey. I had very mixed feelings and a sense of letting people down with a mix of fear.
